Cast out. . . Dirty. . . Ashamed. . .
This woman had been bleeding for 12 YEARS!!! Back in Bible times, when a woman was bleeding, she was considered ritually unclean and anyone who touched her was also unclean. Well, what happens when you’re not just suffering once a month, but constantly for 12 years? You get cast aside. Treated as if you’re filthy and undeserving. As if it were something she had done to cause the bleeding. I can’t imagine being cut off from my friends and family because I was sick. How hard that must have been. Emotionally, physically, and spiritually. She knew that if she were to touch even the hem of Jesus tunic that she would be healed! That’s an amazing and beautiful faith. But when she grabbed his tunic and Jesus asked who touched him, He told her that it was her faith that made her well! Do we have faith like that?? I know I don’t. My faith is more like Thomas who was always questioning and doubting. The Bible says that if we have faith as big as a mustard seed, we could move mountains. I pray that you and I will have great big, beautiful faith like hers. That we will have hearts full of compassion and understanding for people in our lives who are experiencing hardships. That we won’t cast people away assuming their circumstances are self-inflicted. Even when they are that we would have grace and mercy towards each other.
“And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” Luke 8:43
